RIP Betty Ford…

In an era where alcoholism and addiction were little more than an abstract shame that affected the lowest classes, she stood up and made it possible for addicts to seek help without the shame and derision. As First Lady in the 1970’s, she was a vocal proponent for Women’s Rights (frequently in contrast to her husband’s Party), then in 1982, after an intervention from her family and her own battle with addiction to alcohol and opiates, she founded the Betty Ford Center to focus on addiction needs of women. Since that times, her Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, California has become synonymous with celebrities seeking help for their addictions.

Betty Ford, the woman who changed the role of First Lady from demure hostess to social activist, died yesterday at the age of 93.
