I really don’t know what’s most disturbing:
1) That US Senate candidate from Michigan Pete Hoekstra resorted to a level of discourse most recognizable to First Graders – (faux-rhyming an opponent’s name with an undesirable grouping of words – Debbie “SpendItNow” instead of Debbie Stabenow);
2) That the actress in the commercial was given a script of pseudo-pidgin English to muddle through, and sent to ride a bike through a vaguely rice paddy-esque field thus ensuring the completely racist overtones;
or 3) That blatant racism is what we can now expect from Republicans for the next 9 months.
Here’s the TV spot that Hoekstra ran during the Super Bowl yesterday that’s getting everyone atwitter. Watch, if you can stomach it:
In a really disgusting way, it’s almost better for the racism and intolerance to be right on the surface so it can be dealt with directly, instead of the passive-aggressive, underhanded way that Conservatives in the US have treated the Obama administration since 2008.
I can’t wait for the ones about gay marriage to get made! Perhaps they’ll reanimate Paul Lynde and Liberace and have them mincing down the yellow brick road whilst singing a jaunty Broadway showtune!
Remember, when racism is this blatant, anti-gay hate speech isn’t far behind.
