      5:45 pm – 7:00 pm

      For My Wife

On December 14, 2006, a torrential rainstorm flooded the home of Kate Fleming and Charlene Strong. Kate became trapped in the basement by the rising waters. A rescue team freed her after she fell unconscious. At the hospital, a social worker denied Charlene access to Kate—because they weren’t married or otherwise related. (Kate’s sister had to give permission for Charlene to be at Kate’s side in her last moments.) The injustice and indignity of that night’s tragic events turned Charlene into a powerful voice for marriage equality, a transformation chronicled in this compelling documentary by local filmmakers.

    2. Third Tuesday Cocktail Time @ The Seattle Eagle
      6:30 pm – 9:30 pm

Our annual tradition continues as we return to Seattle’s own Eagle to celebrate the spooky month of October.

Keith and the Third Tuesday gang have a lot in store for you! We’ll be supporting Safe Schools Coalition – an incredible organization that helps combat bullying in our schools. Mr. Christensen will be whipping up some delicious JELL-O shots to sell in support of this great charity.

Check out Safe Schools Coalition at the following link:

      http://www.safeschoolscoalition.org/

The Eagle will also be providing a taco beef and fish feast in addition to the famous (and sexy!) bartenders serving up some amazing cocktails.

The Approve Referendum 74 gang will also be back to help us ensure that gay marriage remains a part of Washington State.

AND – our hosts for the evening will be our very own celebrity muscle bear couple – Joe & Dale!

It’s a BIG Third Tuesday that you won’t want to miss. Come on down to the Eagle on the 16th for a guaranteed wild night!

Just like our personal experiences, everything that we read and write is based on context. Many diverse factors, such as our sexuality, gender expression, class, race/ethnicity, even geography, can influence our point of view. After all, no two points of view are exactly the same. During this six-week course, we will read between the lines as we look at how these unspoken factors can influence our writing.

Susan Rees earned a BA in English from the University of Texas in 2006. She has also taken classes at the Bent Writing Institute and led several Smudgy Notebook workshops. Her poetry has appeared in several literary journals and online, and she has performed at local spoken word events. She is a co-founder and administrator for the Smudgy Notebook Workshop Series.

      911 Pine Street
      Seattle, WA 98101

STG Presents WICKED October 10 – November 17, 2012 at The Paramount Theatre in Seattle.

The October 18th performance is a special benefit for Washington United for Marriage. Click here for tickets and more information.

Back by “Popular” demand. Variety calls WICKED ”a cultural phenomenon,” and when it last played Seattle in 2009, it broke box office records and sold out in record time. Winner of 35 major awards, including a Grammy and three Tony Awards, WICKED is “Broadway’s biggest blockbuster” (The New York Times).

Long before that girl from Kansas arrives in Munchkinland, two girls meet in the land of Oz. One – born with emerald green skin – is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. How these two grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good makes for “the most ;complete – and completely satisfying – new musical in a long time” (USA Today).

United In Anger: A History of ACT UP

In a few short years during the 1980s, AIDS grew from obscurity to an epidemic, decimating LGBT communities across the globe. Turning rage into action, women and men came together to save their own lives and formed ACT UP (the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power). These activists fought against corporate greed and government inaction by calling public attention to the rapidly escalating death toll with a mix of indignation, humor, and sex appeal. Using rare footage and interviews, this powerful film takes you through the birth of ACT UP and honors early heroes on the front lines of the ongoing battle against AIDS.

    6. City Arts Fest: David Byrne + St. Vincent @ The 5th Avenue Theatre
      7:00 pm – 11:00 pm

David Byrne is well known as the musician who co-founded the group Talking Heads (1976–88) in New York. On record and in concert, the band was acclaimed by critics and audiences alike; more importantly, however, they have proven to be extremely influential. Talking Heads took popular music in new directions, both in terms of sound and lyrics, and also introduced an innovative visual approach to the genre. In 2002 Talking Heads were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2003 a lovely boxed set was released which includes a DVD of all the band’s videos, and in 2005 aBrick was released with the complete studio catalog on dualdisc with previously unreleased audio and video material. In 2011 Talking Heads Chronology, a DVD featuring live performances spanning from 1976-1983, was released in a limited edition package containing rare photos and a previously unpublished essay by Lester Bangs.

St. Vincent is the recording project of Annie Clark (born 1982, in Tulsa, Oklahoma), a one-woman band who mixes pop balladry, showtune-ish exuberance, squalling electric guitar, and subtle hints of jazz in her particular, complex compositions. Based in Brooklyn, but raised in Dallas, Clark had, before finding fame as St. Vincent, done time in robe-wearing sunshine-pop cult The Polyphonic Spree, and in the live band for banjo-pucking boy-genius Sufjan Stevens. She took her stage name from St. Vincent’s hospital in downtown New York, the place where, amongst other things, poet Dylan Thomas spent his final hours. The joke being that Clark’s music is “the place where poetry comes to die.”

      The Invisible Men

While Tel Aviv may be the most LGBT-friendly city in the Middle East, gay Palestinians still have a difficult and sometimes dangerous time living there legally. This documentary reveals the harrowing stories of several who have run away from their families and are now in hiding. Louie, 32, has been laying low in Tel Aviv for the past eight years, under constant threat of expulsion. Abdu, 24, was outed in Ramallah, accused of espionage, and tortured by Palestinian security forces. Faris, 23, narrowly escaped from the West Bank after his family planned his murder. Their only chance for an open life is to seek asylum abroad and leave their homeland behind forever.

      Gay Latino Los Angeles

Told through the stories of three young men, GAY LATINO LOS ANGELES documents the struggle for identity and acceptance that gay men face in a culture with a rigid definition of masculinity, strong family bonds, and a heavy dose of religion. Alex, an artistic volunteer in the gay community, struggles with a new relationship’s growing pains. Brian, a recent college graduate and activist, tries to find his niche in the job market while coping with his mother’s rejection. And Carlos shares his stories of grappling with domestic violence, drug use, and the gang life in South Central LA.

    2. Gaymers Do Gameworks! @ GameWorks
      6:00 pm – 11:00 pm

      Hey, let’s do this again!

Gay gamer meetup – 6:00 at Gameworks, in the bar/restaurant area on the main floor. Gaming galore and drinks/food! Invite your friends!

Arrive whenever you want – will probably meet up for dinner and drinks and hang out in the food/bar area for the first hour-ish and then go play games.

Even if you aren’t into arcade games and just want to meet a bunch of folks, plenty of folks just go and eat/drink and chat. :)

Cost – $10 for unlimited games from 7-midnight. Please note Gameworks does not have a coat check!

Possible migration to a drinking or dancing venue late in the evening is possible too. :) (ElektroPop at Baltic Room has been where we’ve ended up most times.)

If you have a wristband, please bring it. Otherwise, there will be rainbow wristbands courtesy of Michael Klucher available so you can distinguish our group when looking for folks to play games with.

Please note – this is a event for all gaymers (GLBTQ and “friends of”)! While I can only officially invite people off my friends list, it’s an open, public event. :)

      Anyway, come on by!

      Jobriath A.D.

Called “The American Bowie,” “The True Fairy of Rock & Roll,” and the first openly gay rock star, Jobriath left a legacy deeper than his brief reign. He was sabotaged by a publicity machine run amok, shunned by the gay community, and excommunicated from the music business after just two albums. An early casualty of AIDS, new generations of fans have discovered him and the Pet Shop Boys, Joe Elliott of Def Leppard, Siouxsie Sioux, Scissor Sisters, and Morrissey have all cited Jobriath as a groundbreaking influence. Through interviews, archival material, animation, and new music performances, this glimpse into the soul of a trailblazing 1970s musician will rock your world.

Oscar®-winning actresses Olympia Dukakis (MOONSTRUCK) and Brenda Fricker (MY LEFT FOOT) star in this infectious romantic dramedy about two lifelong lovers who go on the lam in order to stay together. Salty spitfire Stella (Dukakis) and her legally-blind partner Dot (Fricker) have lived together for over 30 years. With both women firmly in their 70s, the question looms whether they can continue to take adequate care of each other in their rustic seaside home. Dot’s neurotic and naïve granddaughter decides to solve the issue by putting Dot in a conservative retirement home. Stella soon breaks her beloved out, and the couple heads for Canada to get legally married and stay together. Picking up an impressionable and attractive hitchhiker, small-town boy turned modern dancer Prentice (newcomer Ryan Doucette), the three form an unlikely bond as they share past troubles and create new ones. CLOUDBURST began in Nova Scotia as an award-winning play by SLGFF favorite Thom Fitzgerald (THE HANGING GARDEN, BEEFCAKE) who adapted and directed it for the screen. This romantic and riotous road movie about life and death, love and commitment has won accolades from audiences around the world, including 19 festival awards in North America and Europe (16 awards for Best Film).
      Audience Award, Best Feature – San Francisco Frameline 2012;
Grand Jury Award, Best Film – Milan Lesbian & Gay Film Festival; Best of the Fest – Palm Springs International Film Festival
